Neruda's Butterflies
A special edition giclée print. Part of the Borderless map series created in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic, these maps are a process of looking at the world through the eyes of a virus where borders are a man-made construct that have no effect on containing the spread of a global virus. This whole series re-imagines a world where we can stitch our hearts back together with compassion and realize our greatest strength in our collective empathy. Right now we need to remain soft, vulnerable, and compassionate, to connect with each other AND we need to fight for a more just and equitable world than what we have been living in. We need a revolution that is based in radical empathy, not one with guns.
'Neruda's Butterflies' was based around a segment of a poem by Pablo Neruda I've spray painted in multiple cities using this stencil. I love the work of poets who are more than writers, but also activists. Who use their words to fight social injustice, and Pablo Neruda was a revolutionary. A poet, a romantic, and a revolutionary needed butterflies because what is more transformative than the work it takes to remain soft enough to remain romantic while continuing to fight against injustice.
These are special edition prints from the originals. Sized 24x36 inches. The gold leaf is hand embellished to each print after printing and signed and dated from quarantine in Frisco, Colorado in May, 2020.
